How to prepare your identity verification, buy a ticket, choose a train and get through the station without turning a rail journey into a stressful puzzle.

01

Start with the official channel

For a first trip, use the English version of China Railway’s 12306 website or app as the reference point. It is the national railway operator’s own booking channel, rather than a marketplace with unfamiliar terms. Foreign visitors can use a passport to buy tickets, but the system uses real-name ticketing. Set up the account and check your identity status before the day you want to travel; manual review may be necessary in some cases.

02

Complete identity verification before a popular travel day

The official visitor guidance says travellers can enter their name, nationality and passport number in the 12306 English site or app. If automatic verification does not finish, a passport information-page photo may be uploaded for manual verification, or the traveller can visit a station ticket office with the passport. Do not leave this step until a holiday morning, when both ticket availability and customer-service time are under pressure.

03

Choose the service for the journey, not the letter alone

G trains are generally the fast intercity services most visitors picture when they hear ‘China high-speed rail’. D and C services can also be useful depending on the route, timetable and city pair. Instead of treating one train letter as universally better, compare the departure station, arrival station, elapsed time and the room you need for transfers. A slightly slower train from a more convenient station can be the easier trip.

04

Use the original document at the station

Bring the same original passport used for the booking. Foreign travellers may use automatic or manual ticket-check gates and should be ready for document verification. Arrive with a buffer: major Chinese stations can be very large, and the time needed to find the correct entrance, security screening area, waiting hall and platform can be longer than a first-time visitor expects.

05

Changes, refunds and a sensible backup plan

Tickets can be changed or refunded through the 12306 English website or app, or at the station ticket office; fees can depend on timing and the replacement journey. Keep a digital copy of the confirmation and the booking reference. If your itinerary is tight, avoid placing an international flight immediately after a long domestic rail leg. The best backup plan is time, not a last-minute scramble.

06

Where useful recommendations may belong

This guide can later include clearly labelled recommendations for an eSIM, travel insurance, a hotel near an early-departure station, or a rail-booking helper where it offers a real advantage. Each recommendation must explain why it is useful, what it costs, and how it differs from the official 12306 channel. Never use an affiliate link simply because it pays a commission.

Before departure, re-check the official 12306 channel and your station details. Railway rules, payment options and ticket-change conditions can change.

IN-DEPTH PRACTICAL NOTES

A complete first-journey workflow

Treat a China rail trip as a sequence of identity, station and timing decisions. The ticket is only one part of the journey; the correct passenger record, exact station and original passport matter at every checkpoint.

Before tickets open

Create the official 12306 account early and enter the passenger name exactly as shown in the passport. Complete any requested identity review before a popular travel date. Search with the full departure and arrival station because a city can have several major stations. Compare the time needed to reach each station, not only the train duration, and avoid a last train if a missed connection would leave no practical backup.

From station entrance to the train

Keep the original passport accessible. Allow time for the correct entrance, security screening, ticket or identity inspection, the waiting hall and the platform release. Large stations may prevent passengers from entering a platform until boarding is announced. Follow the train number and departure time as well as the destination; several services can use nearby gates. Ask uniformed staff before following a crowd when the display is unclear.

Arrival and recovery plan

Save the destination station in Chinese and check which exit fits the hotel or onward transport. Keep the booking confirmation until the trip is complete. If a delay threatens another booking, establish the rail status first, then contact the next provider. For a change or refund, use the official account that holds the ticket and read the displayed conditions before confirming the action.
