Domestic flights in China: a practical guide for visitors

Plan the airport journey, baggage and arrival before a flight becomes the tightest part of the day.

A domestic flight can shorten a long journey in China, but the useful plan includes airport location, check-in time, baggage and onward transport—not just the ticket price.

01

Match the booking to your passport

Check that the passenger name matches your passport, then save the flight number, date, airport and baggage terms. Confirm current check-in and flight information with the airline before departure.

02

Plan the airport journey

Large cities may have more than one airport. Allow time for the trip to the terminal, security and the walk to the gate rather than placing a tight connection immediately before or after the flight.

03

Check baggage rules early

Cabin and checked-baggage limits, along with rules for liquids and batteries, can differ by airline and route. Keep a passport, essential medication, charger, power bank and a small change of clothes with you where permitted.

04

Save the next step offline

Keep the flight number, Chinese airport name, destination address and hotel contact available without relying on a live connection. Decide in advance whether you will use rail, metro or a car after arrival.

The calmest domestic-flight plan connects three moments: getting to the airport, getting through it and getting onward from the arrival terminal.

COMPLETE FLIGHT CHECKLIST

Booking, baggage and irregular operations in one plan

The separate check-in, baggage, seat, delay, cancellation, missed-flight and gate-change notes are consolidated here. Current airline and airport instructions always override a saved screenshot or general guide.

Book the correct airport and passenger

Match the Roman-letter passenger name to the passport and check both airport and terminal. Beijing, Shanghai and other large cities have multiple airports; the city name alone is not enough. Save the operating airline, flight number and Chinese airport name.

Confirm check-in and baggage with the airline

Deadlines and allowances vary by carrier, fare and route. Verify online check-in availability, counter closing time, cabin and checked baggage, liquids, batteries and power-bank rules on the operating airline’s current page. Keep essential medication and documents in the cabin where permitted.

Choose a seat for the real journey

Seat maps can change after an aircraft swap. Treat a paid preference as a request subject to the airline’s terms and review the final assignment at check-in. If mobility, children or a tight connection affect the choice, contact the airline rather than relying only on the map.

At the airport

Use live airport screens and airline notices for the gate and boarding status. A mobile boarding pass saved earlier may show an old gate. Confirm terminal, gate, boarding time and flight number together, then remain close enough to hear or see further changes.

Delay or cancellation

First identify the operating airline’s confirmed status and available rebooking or refund options. Protect the next hotel, rail ticket or connection before making a new purchase. Keep receipts and written notices for an insurance claim, but do not assume every disruption is covered.

If the flight is missed

Contact the airline immediately and ask whether the ticket still has any change value. Do not buy a replacement until you understand the original ticket status and the correct departure airport. Rebuild the day from a confirmed seat, then update the hotel and onward transport.
