Booking a hotel in China: a practical guide for foreign visitors
Check-in documents, payment, cancellation rules and the small booking details that make the first night easier.

A good China hotel booking is more than a low price. Confirm that the property can receive foreign passport holders, understand payment and cancellation terms, and save the information you will need if you arrive late.
01
Confirm the property can receive you
Before paying, check the room rules and contact the property if anything is unclear. China has moved to make accommodation more convenient for foreign travellers, but a quick written confirmation is still useful when a listing is vague. Save the hotel’s Chinese address, phone number and your booking number offline.
02
Book the room, not just the headline price
Compare the same room across platforms by total price, breakfast, taxes, cancellation deadline and payment timing. A prepaid rate, pay-at-property rate and refundable rate can look similar while carrying very different rules. Future recommendations on this site should explain those differences and clearly disclose any affiliate relationship.
03
Bring the original passport
China’s official visitor guidance says foreign travellers staying in hotels must present a passport, foreign permanent resident ID card or other valid identification for registration at reception. Hotels handle the accommodation registration for their guests. Keep the reservation name close to the passport’s Roman-letter name, and ensure each guest has their own document.
04
Ask about payment and deposits early
Official guidance lists cash, bank cards, Alipay and Weixin Pay among hotel payment methods, but international-card acceptance can vary by property. Ask whether a deposit is required, in what currency, and how it will be released. Keep the deposit receipt and final folio; a card reversal or refund can take additional time after checkout.
05
Choose location for the first and last night
For a late arrival, early train or airport transfer, a simple hotel near the right transport point can be more valuable than a nicer room across the city. Check the map for the actual entrance, walking distance with luggage and late-night transport. Send the hotel your expected arrival time if it may be late.
06
Keep a calm problem plan
If a booking cannot be found, show the confirmation and payment record, then contact both the hotel and booking service. Translation apps work well for short requests such as ‘I have a reservation under this passport name’ or ‘When will the deposit be returned?’ Keep screenshots and written messages if the room or charge differs materially from the reservation.
The best hotel booking leaves you with three things before departure: a confirmed foreign-passport check-in, clear payment terms and an address you can reach without depending on a single app.
