Essential travel apps for China: a foreign visitor’s setup guide
Prepare data, payments, transport and offline information before an app becomes necessary.

Travel apps in China connect payments, movement, rail bookings, addresses and communication. You do not need every app; you need the few functions your itinerary depends on to work before departure.
01
Start with a reliable connection
Choose eSIM, international roaming or a local SIM, then check device compatibility and whether you need to keep a number for verification messages. Test the connection before relying on payment or ride-hailing.
02
Set up payment with a backup
Foreign visitors can check mobile-payment services such as Alipay or WeChat Pay before travel. Confirm eligible cards and verification requirements, and keep a physical card and some cash as a backup.
03
Separate maps from ride-hailing
Use maps for addresses, subway stations and walking routes; use a ride-hailing service when it is useful. Save the hotel’s Chinese address as well as its English name, and confirm pickup point and vehicle details.
04
Use the official railway channel
For high-speed rail, use the official 12306 English website or app for booking and identity information. Save confirmations and station names where you can reach them without a connection.
05
Keep translation and offline copies ready
Translation can help with short conversations, but save key addresses, reservations, insurance details and emergency contacts as screenshots or Chinese text. The important information should remain reachable offline.
A good app setup is not the largest collection. It is the one where login, data, payment and address all work when you need them.
