Food and water on China trains: a visitor’s guide
Pack simple essentials, check what your journey offers and keep what you need within reach.

Food is easiest when planned as part of the ride. Availability, selection and opening hours can vary, so carry a small backup rather than depend on one option.
01
Pack water and a simple backup
Bring water and familiar, easy-to-carry food for the first part of the journey. Choose tidy items that fit in a small bag and need little preparation.
02
Check the journey before boarding
Look at departure time, duration and arrival time. If you have dietary requirements, bring a suitable option instead of assuming every service can meet them.
03
Keep food away from valuables
Keep drinks stable and store passports, cards, electronics and tickets in a separate small bag. Open containers carefully and keep the aisle clear.
04
Use onboard and station options flexibly
Some stations and trains may offer food or drinks, but selection and payment can differ. Confirm the price and order before paying; do not make one queue the only plan for an important meal.
05
Plan for arrival too
Keep water available for the first hour after arrival, especially when transferring. Save the next address and transport plan before the journey ends.
06
Leave the seat area ready
Collect wrappers, check the seat, luggage area and charging point, then take every bag with you. The final minutes prevent many lost-item problems.
Prepare for the journey you actually have: water, a simple backup meal and a clear plan for the next stop.
