Luggage and valuables on China trains: a visitor’s guide
Separate essential items, store larger bags without blocking the carriage and check everything before you leave.

The practical goal is not to watch every bag constantly. It is to keep the items that matter in one place, make luggage easy to recognise and build a short check into each change of seat, train or station.
01
Use one small essentials bag
Keep passport, payment cards, phone, medicine, tickets and charging cable in a bag that stays with you. Do not scatter these items across seat pockets and larger luggage.
02
Make larger bags easy to identify
Use a clear tag or distinctive strap without displaying private details. Place bags only where they do not block doors or aisles, and take a quick photo before boarding if it helps you remember their condition.
03
Pack for the journey, not just the destination
Put water, a light layer, tissues and power bank in the small bag. This prevents repeated opening of larger luggage and keeps the carriage calm when you need something.
04
Check at every transition
Before leaving a seat, berth, station waiting area or train, check the seat area, charging point and luggage position. Use the same short routine each time.
05
Ask for official help when needed
If an item is missing, keep the train number, carriage, seat and travel time ready. Speak with official staff and use the booking record; avoid sharing passport or payment details with strangers.
06
Prepare for arrival early
Open the next address and transport plan before the train stops. Gather bags calmly, then let the exit flow move after you have checked every location.
Keep essentials with you, make large bags recognisable and use the same check before every move.
